Volunteer Your Time

We appreciate your interest in Small Steps and are excited about working with you!

COVID-19 Update

To mitigate the risk of infection on campus, we will begin the school year with limited access to the building—only essential visitors who have been screened may enter. Please note all opportunities with an asterisk (*) below may be impacted by COVID-19 restrictions.

Prior to volunteering with the children, volunteers may be asked to complete a background check form, which requires a social security number. Please contact the Volunteer Services Manager, Madeleine Haynes, at mhaynes@ssnc.org if you are interested in volunteering or if there are other ways you would like to contribute.

Buddy Program*

Being a Buddy means having a special one-on-one friendship with a Small Steps student. A volunteer spends 30 minutes each week with his/her Small Steps Buddy, engaged in child-directed play, including games, puzzles, conversation, and other fun activities.

Buddy programMany Buddy friendships last for three years of the student’s tenure although we only ask for a school year commitment. A 1.5 hour training in SET for Life, Small Steps’ social and emotional program, and a background check are required to be a Buddy. Buddies can visit Monday through Friday; dates and times are coordinated with the campus volunteer lead.

Prayer Partners

Each Prayer Partner is assigned an individual Small Steps student to pray for throughout the school year. We ask that Prayer Partners spend at least 30 minutes each week praying for the Lord's blessing, guidance, protection, and strength for his/her Small Steps student. This is a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to be an integral part of the work the Lord is doing in our students’ lives!

Parent Education Events*

Volunteers are needed for childcare during evening parent education events. Small Steps parents gather throughout the year to learn, fellowship, and build community.

While they are meeting, staff and volunteers supervise free play and lead activities for the children. When weather permits, the volunteers and children play on the playground. Parents have the security of knowing their children are having a good time in a safe place, and volunteers enjoy playing with the children. Training is not required, but a background check is necessary. This is a great opportunity for groups to volunteer.

Weekend Warriors*

Volunteers help Small Steps in many significant ways, including participating in on-site work projects on specific weekends. Projects could include gardening, playground beautification, van cleaning, and building maintenance.

School Events*

Volunteers help with setting up, serving, and cleaning up at various events for families throughout the year, including Graduation and Thanksgiving Feast. There is no required training for these events.
