The COVID-19 pandemic, unprecedented in our lifetime, has catapulted each one of us into a season of uncertainty and isolation. We are blessed at Small Steps to be a part of a loving and generous community, and you are an important part of our Small Steps family. Today, in the wake of COVID-19, the health and safety of our community is our top priority.
During this uncertain time, we are evaluating the needs of our students and their families and working to determine how we can best serve them. Through communication with our families, we have learned that loss of wages and subsequently access to food is the primary concern for those in our community.
For the first two weeks we were closed, we were able to distribute meals every school day to our families through a partnership with Kids Meals and Second Servings. We have also distributed necessities (diapers) and educational activities and resources to our families.
Our teachers are remaining in contact with students and families regularly, preparing appropriate resources and using online tools to provide educational opportunities for students to continue to learn.
Help assemble a food box for a family. These food boxes would provide much needed food to our food-insecure households, sustaining them not just for one meal at a time, but for a week-long basis. Next time you are at the grocery store, you can purchase 10-15 items from this list to create a food box/bag for one of our families! If you are looking to engage your kids, we welcome decorated boxes and/or homemade cards inserted with the items.
We will have safe distanced drive through drop-offs every Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Small Steps (2902 Jensen Dr. Houston, TX 77026).
Visit our Amazon Wish List to find items our families need now. Diapers and Visa gift cards are the biggest needs.
Donate to Small Steps. Help support us through this time by giving to our general operating fund in support of our staff and school.
If you know of friends and family members who are looking to make an impact in our community in a safe way, please do not hesitate to pass this along. We are acutely aware that our families are among the most vulnerable around us at this time, and we are overwhelmingly grateful for your support of Small Steps and our mission.
