About Small Steps

Small Steps was founded in 1995 to meet the needs of some of Houston’s youngest and most at-risk children.

1999

Our first campus opened in the First Ward

2006

Our second campus opened in the Fifth Ward

2021

Our third campus opened in Gulfton

Our original campus closed in 2021 due to the gentrification of Houston’s First Ward, but Small Steps continues to grow.

We currently serve 225 students at our Fifth Ward and Gulfton campuses.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this incredible life-enriching opportunity for my son. I have seen such wonderful progress and growth in just a short period of time.

The Small Steps Mission

To provide an exemplary early childhood program to instill and foster the social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth of economically at-risk children and their families.

The communities Small Steps serves lack sufficient, affordable childcare options for families.

Children who do not have access to stimulating learning environments – which is especially true for low-income students – may be as many as 18 months behind their peers by the time they start kindergarten.

As a high-quality early childhood education program, Small Steps helps narrow the opportunity gap between children from low- and high-income backgrounds.
