Gulfton Campus

In January 2021, Small Steps opened a new campus in southwest Houston in partnership with St. Luke’s United Methodist Church!

Our Gulfton campus serves 75 children and their families each school year.

We feel grateful to be able to serve another community in Houston that lacks affordable childcare options and to work towards our goal of breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty for more families.

Gulfton Community

53%

of children live below the poverty line in the Gulfton/Sharpstown area.

$23,228

is the median income for families living in a two-square mile area around our Gulfton campus, less than half of the median income for the city of Houston.

The Gulfton area is a common refugee resettlement area, contributing to the cultural diversity of the area.

Our Gulfton students reflect this diversity and hail from around the world, including countries in Africa, Central and South America, and the Middle East.

Small Steps will continue to support the family unit at our Gulfton campus by joining forces with Connect Community, a collaboration of best-in-class organizations in the Gulfton area. Connect Community is seeking to bring about holistic revitalization through the development of high-quality mixed income housing, cradle-to-career education pipelines, and community wellness resources.

Campaign

In February 2021, Small Steps completed our $3,000,000 Gulfton expansion campaign, which included renovations, campus start-up expenses, costs for the first three years of operation, and investment in our continuity fund. Operating costs for the 2022-2023 school year are funded through a separate expansion campaign budget. Small Steps will begin fundraising annually for the operating expenses of the Gulfton campus in the 2023-2024 school year.

Thank you to our extraordinarily generous community of donors and supporters for making this possible! We are especially grateful to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church for partnering with Small Steps to open the Gulfton campus at their Gethsemane location and contributing financially to the project cost.
